Steve Phillips

Secretary-General, Conference of European Directors of Roads (CEDR)

Steve is the Secretary-General of the Conference of European Directors of Roads (CEDR) which comprises the general directors of national road authorities.  CEDR’s role is to provide support and advice on issues concerning the entire road transport system and its role within the overall transport system.  Steve’s role is to coordinate the five focus areas reflecting the scope of road authority interests; 1 - digitisation and innovation; 2 - environment and resilience, 3 - safety, operations, mobility and performance, 4 - resources and asset management, and 5 - regulations and harmonization. Steve lives in Brussels and first moved in 2003 to lead a European organisation focused on facilitating cooperation between national road research institutions, through which he created strong connections with European and international bodies and partner organisations. Before which he was with the UK Department for Transport and the UK’s Transport Research Laboratory.  Much of Steve’s technical career was concerned with ensuring the implementation of research results through legislation and standardisation.  He contributed to dozens of international projects and worked on both road and rail issues.  Steve has an honours degree in Astrophysics from University College Cardiff.
